Yoga instructor and relaxation expert Susan Ginsberg says she started her Stop and Breathe program after seeing the positive impact on people’s health and well-being when they learned how to properly breathe, relax and meditate.
She now offers Stop and Breathe at NorthShore University HealthSystem, the Kellogg Cancer Center, through businesses and in private sessions.
“When people are going through stress, their breathing is typically a big part of how they handle the stress,” Ginsberg says, adding that most people actually breathe improperly.
She says the program-which focuses on relaxation, visualization and breathing-is geared at people who don’t think yoga is for them.
“… It’s taking basic breathing and relaxation techniques that most people really don’t know and not making it intimidating, but making it such that the average person can understand and pick up on these pretty simple techniques with the right guidance,” she says.
Ginsberg says Stop and Breathe can help parents work through the stress of parenting, while also helping their kids relax prior to big tests or deal with anxiety or illness.
A person can typically feel an effect from proper breathing within five minutes, she says.
