A water wonder

When you see the words water ski show, what comes to mind? The Tommy Bartlett Show in the Wisconsin Dells? Cypress Gardens in Florida? Or Aquanuts Water Ski Show in Twin Lakes, Wis.? Well, the latter is closest to us and many would say it is also the best of the three. And it’s put on by amateurs.

The Aquanuts put on shows at 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Saturday evenings during the summer. There is no admission and no parking charge (a freewill offering is taken and a colorful program can be obtained with a $5 donation). Enjoy a fun and relaxing evening as you sit at the waterfront of Lake Marie in a lawn chair or bleacher seat. In 2006 the Aquanuts placed fifth in the National Tournament, competing against other teams from the Midwest. Most of the team members are high school and college students who will amaze you with barefoot skiers, ballet lines, ramp jumping and four-high human pyramids.

Go online to www.usawaterski.org/pages/clubs/clubs.asp for a listing of other teams throughout the United States, including one at neighboring Wonder Lake in northern Illinois. Check the Aquanuts Web site, www.aquanutwatershows.com, for dates. The Aquanuts 2007 theme is"Charlie’s Revenge.” The shows are performed Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting. Your day can even include a dip in the lake before the show and a picnic on the beach or a short walk to a nearby restaurant in downtown Twin Lakes. The Wonder Lake organization also has a Web site and information is available there at wonderlakeskiteam.org.
