Global warming can be a tough topic to discuss with kids, but the Kidsworks Touring Theatre Co. has found a way to address the subject that will teach kids while still entertaining them.
Artistic Director Andrea Salloum has written a show she says has"lots of hard facts, but is done in a very entertaining, funny and poignant” way.
“Global Warming! What’s a Kid to Do” will be shown at 40 branches of the Chicago Public Library from July 3-Aug. 2 and will feature an interactive performance for kids 4-12. In the show, the cast and audience members travel to different countries to see the effects of global warming.
“For the younger kids, they’ll really enjoy the costumes, the big polar bear and we’re going to dress a kid up as a monkey,” Salloum says. At the end of the show, kids will be invited to come up on stage and talk about what they can do to stop global warming.
“They’ll walk away going, yes, we should recycle. Yes, turn out the lights. They’ll be pumped up,” Salloum says."I think even the little ones will get it. They’ll go home and lecture their parents.”
And even though the show tackles a difficult topic, kids will walk away feeling empowered, not frightened."Parents shouldn’t be afraid. This is a piece designed for kids that’s educational and entertaining,” Salloum says.
