4 unexpected birthday parties on the North Shore

My son’s 8th birthday is coming right up, and the daunting task of party planning has been on my mind for awhile. I could easily book a jump-house party, which is what he’s been asking for anyway, and what we’ve done for the past few years. But for some reason, this year, I want to do something different, a little more unexpected. Something off the beaten path that will wow the little party-goers—or at least get them try something new. Here are four spots in the north suburbs that are ready to party when you are.

Little chefs, unite. FlavorPot’s two-hour birthday parties cook up a culinary adventure with fresh ingredients that kids work with to create a homemade—and healthy—birthday meal. Themed packages include a tea party, pizza party, cupcake party, Mexican fiesta and more. Instructors walk party guests through each recipe, step by step, for an interactive party that ends with happy tummies.

Glitzy Girlz Pop Rock Glam Jam

With a name like that, you know some super-glam fun is in the works. Northbrook Parks and Rec staff guide this two-hour party, where guests decorate photo frames, make crystal bracelets and receive glitter microphone props before the real fun begins: an epic dance party featuring the limbo, cha cha slide, hula hoops and freeze dance.

3323 Walters Ave., Northbrook

Splash Landings Aquatic Center

One cool thing about an indoor pool? It’s much easier to keep your eye on little ones in the water. Besides, with zero-depth entry, a control tower-themed water slide and spray features for younger kids, Splash Landings is just as cool as any outdoor pool. Rent the entire pool for a birthday party that little swimmers will love, regardless of the weather.

2400 Chestnut Ave., Glenview

Kids Science Labs

Interactive experiments plus complete setup and cleanup make this science-lover’s paradise the perfect place to party. Birthday packages are geared toward children 4 years and older, but younger siblings are welcome to enjoy the lab’s play area while the party is hopping. The best part of it all? Let’s just say slime gets involved.
