5 best thrift stores for kids items in the Southwest suburbs

Are you someone who loves bargain shopping and saving money? Consider buying your kids items that are secondhand.

Take a trip to the southwest suburbs of Chicago for some of the best thrift and resale stores. Most items are only slightly used, (some are in perfection condition!) and many are one of a kind. You can even find brand names that are priced so low it’s like they are giving them to you for free.

Here are my top five favorite thrift stores to visit.

For clothes:

Second Chance Thrift Shoppe

44 Stephen Street

Lemont, IL 60439

(630) 243-1279

Second Chance Thrift Shoppe is the place to go when shopping for kids’ clothes. The Shoppe has racks and racks (and racks!) of gently used items and quite often you can find brand names such as Adidas, Gap, Gymboree, Nike and Oshkosh B’Gosh.

On one Sunday each month, there is a special where everything in the store is half off. They also run a special where you can fill up a brown paper with clothes for just $10.

For toys:

Goodwill

1146 State Street

Lemont IL 60439

(630) 257-5608

If you are searching for gently used kids toys, you will find them at the Goodwill in Lemont.

They often have a large variety from Disney, Fisher Price, Little Tykes, Mattel and more.

Sometimes the store will also run additional specials for savings off your entire purchase by offering a scratch off ticket where you can save an additional 10, 15 or 20 percent.

For furniture:

The Community Shop (Carousel Shop)

23 W Calendar Ave

La Grange, IL 60525

(708) 354-3803

Looking for some furniture for your kids’ room? The Community Shop may be the place for you. There is a wide selection of gently used, beautiful, high-quality furniture at very reasonable costs.

From time to time the store will run a yellow tag sale where all yellow tag items are half off.

For one-of-a-kind items:

Gallery 1700

1700 Plainfield Rd (US Route 30)

Crest Hill, IL 60403

(815) 725-8616

If you are hunting for any one-of-a-kind items for your kids, check out Gallery 1700.

The store has quite a few treasures for kids that are unique, antique, retro and old school. Some of the coolest things they sell are old comic books, magazines, and movie and television posters. They have a huge selection to choose from!

Often the store runs specials where you can save a percentage off on certain items.

For movies/DVDs:

Savers

15625 94th Avenue

Orland Park, IL 60462

(708) 460-3655

Looking for kids movies? You’ll want to visit Savers in Orland Park.

They sell kids films from Disney, Nickelodeon, Universal Pictures, Warner Brothers and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

If you sign up for the free saving club you can save an additional 50 percent off your entire purchase on certain days of the month.
