Summer BBQ all year long at Uncle Bub’s

For years my husband has mentioned a great lunch spot near his office in Westmont. He described the great sauces and pulled pork sandwiches at this “little place,” Uncle Bub’s. Finally, my rib-loving 8-year-old insisted we all go.

I’m glad he did.

There’s nothing fancy about Uncle Bub’s, with its wood booths and slightly southern tin-sign décor. But what it offers is really finger-licking good food at fair prices. We stepped up to the counter to face an extensive menu of ribs, chicken and pork. Baby-back or St. Louis style ribs? Would you like your chicken broasted or barbecued? Which sides would you like with that? View the full menu online ahead of time to save yourself time and confusion.

It’s one of those places where you order at the counter and go find a table. But I was wonderfully surprised to discover that did not mean a sacrifice in service. The servers were so friendly and attentive, recommending sides, refilling our drinks, seeing to our every need. When you’re covered in barbecue sauce it’s nice to have someone go refill your soda cup.

Most importantly though, the food is delicious. I splurged on the Rib& Chicken Combo ($18.49) and found both tender and juicy. With tangy baked beans, crisp coleslaw and cornbread, there was definitely enough for leftovers. My son raved about the Chicken Leg Basket from the kids’ menu ($5.49) even while he stole ribs off Dad’s platter. In fact, while you can get a burger or chicken strips on the kids’ menu, it’s barbecue centered, offering menu staples in kid-sized portions.

Each table has bottles of mild and spicy sauce, but the restaurant also features a condiment bar with every conceivable hot sauce, mustard and garnish you can imagine. In fact, my kids snacked on sliced pickles before dinner while I grabbed the necessary side sauces.

We were too full to sample the bread pudding or peach cobbler, but my boys did enjoy their soft-serve cones from the ice cream bar. A treasure in its local community for more than 10 years, Uncle Bub’s is worth the trip for good, unfussy barbecue.
