Summer adventures to read


MY MOST EXCELLENT YEAR: A NOVEL OF LOVE, MARY POPPINS AND FENWAY PARK, by Steve Kluger, Puffin, $8.99; ages 13 and up.

The three biggest things in T.C.’s life are the Red Sox, his dad and his best friend, Augie.  CITY OF GLASS, by Cassandra Clare, Margaret K. McElderry Books, $17.99; ages 12 and up.

This third book in the Mortal Instruments series takes us to the City of Glass where Clary must go to save her dying mother. Sounds easy, except entering the city is illegal and the punishment is death. Jace doesn’t want her to go and Simon has been thrown in jail. The children of the Moon, Night and Faerie all gather for the biggest war of all time-and Clary, Jace and Simon are in the battle of their lives.

 HURRICANE GOLD (A James Bond Adventure), by Charlie Higson, Hyperion Books, $16.99; ages 9-12.

James Bond has left school to stay with his aunt and rest. Their vacation to Mexico is cut short when on the very first night, bad guys show up. James finds himself trying to survive a hurricane, rescue two kidnapped children, travel through the jungles of Mexico and ultimately battle the bad guys on the island of Lagrimas Negras.

 STORM: THE BLACK SPHERE, E.L. Young, Dial, $16.99; ages 9-12.

Will, Andrew and Gaia are teen geniuses who started their own agency called STORM to rid the world of bad guys. Their next case starts when five of the world’s leading scientists are killed and the sixth one is on the run. STORM heads to the Swiss Alps to find the missing scientist, save the technology he has and stop the people in the Black Sphere.

 SIMON BLOOM: THE OCTOPUS EFFECT, by Michael Reisman, Dutton Juvenile, $16.99; ages 9-12.

Ever since Simon became the keeper of the Book of Physics, he and his friends have discovered some really cool stuff and some people who want it. In this second book of the series, Simon, Owen and Alysha must stop Sirabetta before she can restore her powers.
