Stages, Sights and Sounds Festival offers plenty of all three

For less than the cost of a movie ticket, your child can see some of the world’s most brilliant artists at this year’s Stages, Sights and Sounds Festival April 29-May 16, Festival Curator Mary Kate Barley-Jenkins says.

TIPS FOR PARENTS

  • Plan out the itinerary using the Web site if you want to see more than one event.
  • Bring extra snacks, juice box or water because the venues do not have concessions.
  • Make sure both kids and parents wear slip-off shoes for audience participation activities.

On Barley-Jenkins’ can’t-miss list:

Lelavision, a husband-wife team, creates musical sculptures that they perform on, in and around. “It’s just breathtaking,” she says.

Visible Fictions, a Scotland contribution, has created a two-person adaptation of “Jason and the Argonauts.” She says this is one of the shows that will appeal to boys because it’s physical and slapstick.

The Galilee Multicultural Theater, from Israel, will present “Sofia’s Drawings,” a play based on the drawings of a 16-year-old hiding from the Nazis during World War II. The drawings are woven together with actors, puppets and videos.

“We try to take the best of the international work for young people because that is rarely seen in Chicago, combining it with the best of Chicago,” she says.
