St. Croix is an island retreat for families

Where are three U.S. Virgin Islands, each with its own unique charm. St. Thomas is the cosmopolitan island; St. John, the natural one. And then there’s St. Croix, known for its history and culture—and, of course, its beaches.

My daughter, Tess, and I visited St. Croix this summer and stayed as guests of a true island paradise called The Buccaneer. Owned by the same family since 1947, this resort is beautiful, the staff is endlessly helpful and pleasant and, best of all for families, lots of stuff is included in the per night price, such as a buffet breakfast, pool and water toys, kayaks, an in-pool scuba lesson, the kids’ club and an evening reception featuring native stilt dancers.

Located right on the beach (three beaches actually), The Buccaneer has a variety of rooms, each one more fabulous than the next. Several are great for families (including two-room suites that give parents that most coveted of vacation specials: a separate bedroom). Check the Web site for special rates.

While you’re there, don’t miss a chance to take a Tan Tan Jeep Tour. We laughed, squealed and giggled as we bounced over the rough terrain, the wind in our faces and an island shower pouring down on our heads.

We got a close look at one of the island’s many abandoned sugar mills, stopped to marvel at a (non-alcoholic) beer-drinking pig and ultimately were awed by the natural wonder of a tide pool.

Even the non-swimmer in our group couldn’t resist a chance to wade into the warm salt water as the waves crashed over the rock wall. (Be warned, however, the climb over the rocky terrain to get to the tide pools is a bit difficult. Our guides were helpful, but two members of our group, both older, less mobile women, chose to stay with the Jeeps rather than risk a fall.)
