Snack smarter this holiday

Finding the right healthy snack can be challenging at any time of the year, but especially the holidays! How many times do you grab a scary snack with unidentifiable ingredients or a snack filled with empty calories that only leaves you hungrier?

My three favorite snacks all include almonds, since they are the most filling tree nut. Plus, the protein in almonds creates long lasting energy – perfect for the holiday season!

Granola with almonds & dried fruit

First, you can never go wrong with granola packed with nuts and dried fruit. To obtain the maximum benefits of protein, fiber and whole grains, pair granola with yogurt and fruit. I love the combination of granola, plain yogurt, and a diced green apple.

Frozen dark chocolate banana with almonds

This is a sweet way to add potassium, fiber, and antioxidants to your day! Peel two bananas, split them in half, roll each half in melted dark chocolate, sprinkle slivered or chopped almonds over the chocolate, put popsicle sticks into each banana, put them on parchment paper and freeze. Eat when you need a sweet, healthy snack.

Celery with almond butter

Lastly, an old-school favorite. Remember ants on a log?! Take three sticks of celery, fill them with almond butter (about 2 Tablespoons), and top with raisins or dried cranberries. This healthy snack not only brings me back to after-school specials but also fills me up, tastes delicious, and is fun for everyone in the family to eat!

When you snack this holiday season, now you can snack smarter!
