Smashing pumpkins

Not sure what to do with that jack-o-lantern with the face that’s starting to cave in? Bring your kids and your gloomy gourd (the pumpkin, that is…) to the Discovery Center Museum, where you’ll all create a catapult and then set the orange guy aloft.

Beyond the enjoyment of seeing their pumpkin turn to pulp, the kids will take in lessons about the physics of the museum’s giant trebuchet and the botany behind spices that make pumpkins so yummy to eat. With all the high-flying fun, they won’t even realize they’re learning.

Free with admission. 1-4 p.m. Nov. 6. 711 N. Main St., Rockford. (815) 963-6769, discoverycentermuseum.org.
