My parents enjoyed Chestnut Mountain Resort when they were a young couple. As a family, we went there when I was a little girl and this year, my boys and I visited.
It’s a nice place that has been around since 1959. It feels as though it hasn’t changed that much. The faux Swiss-chalet lodge is well kept and still surprises you as you come up the drive, because it looks a little out of place in the Midwest.
But what makes the 114-room Chestnut resort spectacular is the breathtaking view. It is perched on top of a beautiful bluff that sweeps right down to the mighty Mississippi River. When you stand at the lodge and look down, you can see woodlands, three states and, if you’re lucky, a show of eagles flying overhead.
There is great skiing here. Really, there is. And depending on the weather, skiing can last through St. Patrick’s Day. (They make their own snow.) And this is a family-friendly place.
The ski and snow board instructors I saw the weekend we visited were all patient and engaging, as were the chair lift attendants. I was also impressed with the two playcare programs for ages 4-6 and ages 7-12.
There is an indoor pool, nine family suites, a restaurant and a bar. The food was not special, but it was fine. Besides, you are 15 minutes from Galena and a host of restaurants.
Once Memorial Day hits, the alpine slides are open daily through Labor Day. No skill here, just a great view going downhill. Check the Web site for prices and packages.
