My son is an addict. It took me a long time to be able to admit it. I would be lying if I told you I was surprised, but truth be told he gets his addiction from my side of the family, my late Grandfather to be specific. Every night my Grandfather would finish off a pint or a gallon, sometimes more, sometimes less. Leo has started on that same path, though not as excessive, it is alarming none the less. We tried to stage an intervention, but as soon as he would run in to his friends “Ben” & “Jerry” at the supermarket he would fall right back off the wagon, and now that “The Purple Cow Ice Cream Café” has opened in Uptown, I am afraid we may have lost our son to his addiction forever.
Yes, my son is addicted to ice cream. What did you think I was talking about; the kid is only 6 mind you? Leo loves his ice cream, loves, loves, loves his after dinner treat. Who can blame him? That is why with much fanfare and jubilation we welcomed “The Purple Cow” to our neighborhood.
Leo and I were enjoying a boy’s night out when we decided to walk down to “The Purple Cow” and see what they had had to offer. The first thing that sticks out is the décor. It has a white and purple spotted décor with that old “parlor” feel. Katie and Eric greeted us with smiles and a friendly “how do you do?” They took the extra time out to answer all of our questions and were very knowledgeable about all the products. “The Purple Cow” prides itself in buying local. You will find local companies represented such as Mellos (Chicago style popcorn) and Metropolis Coffee among others. The ice cream was represented by twenty two flavors. Since Dad is still on a diet, I let Leo indulge solo. Justin was more than happy to let Leo try a sample of the “Birthday Cake” ice cream, and after that Leo was hooked. Leo, the ice cream “connoisseur” said it was “the best ever!” I have to be honest, I even snuck a lick and he was right.
I didn’t get a chance to talk with the owner Mr. Mark Cohen, but from that Katie told me it seems his inspiration for “The Purple Cow” comes from his own kids. You can see the child like imagination that went in to its creation. Mark is planning on expanding and remodeling a part of his property to include a “party room” for that special occasion. Not in the mood for ice cream; not to worry “The Purple Cow” also has Cookies, Candy, Muffins, Shakes, and Smoothies to go with all the aforementioned.
Yup, my son is an addict and the only prescription is more “Purple Cow!”
