One of the biggest Pinterest crazes I’ve seen this year is drilling pumpkins in lieu of carving. The concept is relatively simple and as a mom of boys, the thought of making something appear slightly more girly appealed to me. Whether you’re adding flowers or a candle, drilling pumpkins can be considerably less messy with designs that are easier to follow.
I decided to test out this pin and see if it was really as good as it looked!
What you’ll need:
- 1 beautiful round pumpkin (color doesn’t matter, just make sure you love it!)
- A charged drill with various bits (I used the same size throughout, which worked perfectly)
- A knife and spoon (for cutting the top off and scooping out the guts)
- Clorox wipes
First, I started by completely cleaning the pumpkin. Next, I cut off the top, scooped out the guts, and prepared for the drilling. If you feel so inclined, separate those seeds and create delicious Roasted Pumpkin Seeds. They make a great, healthy snack!
Many of the pins suggested mapping out your design with a Sharpie and then drilling holes. I free-handed my design and then set to work. Either way, the artistry is up to you. I’ve seen drilled Jack o’lantern faces, elaborate floral designs and patterns with the various sizes. I began drilling the holes -be sure to completely go through. Once my design was complete, I used a bamboo skewer to clean out each hole and then wiped the entire pumpkin down with a Clorox wipe -a quick version of the bleach water concept to preserve your pumpkin for longer.
Drilling my pumpkin was fun, easy to do and created a design that I really loved. Apart from the initial scooping, I found this to be cleaner and the design was easier to create -no scraping, turning, or pulling pumpkin pieces away.
