During Chicago’s winters, we’re all dreaming of a warm and cozy getaway. But with icy roads and long airport lines, a getaway can seem like more trouble than it’s worth. Instead, try a getaway in downtown Chicago.
Through the end of March, Chicago Mart Plaza, a Holiday Inn across the street from the Merchandise Mart, is offering a Candyality Family Golden Ticket package.

If you can’t picture the hotel, that might be because it’s located atop a regular office building. Even its entrance and parking are a little tricky, so watch for the driveway off the intersection of Franklin and Orleans streets. Packages begin at 9 per room and at Candyality. Depending on the size of your family, you may want to consider one of its spacious suites or adjoining rooms. In any case, the rooms are comfortable and the views are breathtaking.
Rooms come complete with cable and game systems, so kids may never want to leave. But, who doesn’t want candy? After check-in, take a quick cab ride to the North Bridge Mall for a tour and tasting at Candyality. Your family will get a brief history of candy, from chocolate to gummy bears. Best of all, you get to taste as you go. (I recommend bringing a bottle of water as all that tasting can leave you thirsty.)
You’ll even find out what your personal sweet tooth tells about your personality. With a great selection of candies new and old, you and your kids can stock up on some treats for the hotel room and home.
Head back to the hotel for a swim in the sky-lit pool before enjoying a tasty dinner. My sons loved having milk and cookies delivered to the room, while I enjoyed a cocktail, all part of the package. The hotel’s Italiasia offers both Italian or Asian dishes. My oldest son raved about the Bolognese sauce while my little ones were thrilled to learn our server was a magician who promised to treat them to tricks if they ate their dinners. As part of the package, we ate our complimentary breakfast before another swim and check-out.
