We all want to instill healthy eating habits in our children. But no matter how vigilant we are at home, dining out can pose a slew of junk-food landmines. That’s why it’s great that Edgewater’s popular American café, Nookies, has partnered with Healthy Fare for Kids to develop a menu that offers not only nutritious options, but also outstanding flavor.

Nookies recently hosted my mom, sons and me for a tasty lunch. Seated in a large comfortable booth, we browsed the new “Just for Kids” menu and discovered both breakfast and lunch options aimed to please. Standard offerings have been modified to include whole grains, gluten-free choices and plenty of fruits and vegetables. (Dinner entrees include a kid gourmet option as well as some house favorites in kid-sized portions.)
Our server enticed us with his description of fresh-squeezed juices and smoothies. I also respect the restaurant’s commitment to locally grown produce. This is the kind of detail that elevates Nookies from good to great.
We sampled all three soup options and found them to be savory and delicious. Even the rolls were outstanding. Our lunches ran the gamut from gluten-free chicken tenders to a zesty salmon wrap, a flavorful, moist veggie burger and a generous portion of pasta. Not overly fussy, Nookies provided simple entrees prepared perfectly.
Nookies is a terrific neighborhood spot and well worth the trip for families. Look for the Healthy Fare menu options to come to other Nookies locations this summer.
