Me time ideas for Chicago moms on Mother’s Day

Some days I’d like to sneak out the back door and do something for myself. You know, like relax in a bubble bath without a kid popping up saying “I see you” in a creepy toddler voice, take an interrupted nap or read a book for more than three pages without falling asleep and dropping the book on my face.

With Mother’s Day approaching soon, I’m sure most of you have obligatory brunch plans. I get it, you want to honor the women in your life that helped shape the woman you have become; whether it be your grandmas, aunts, mothers-in-law, or, of course, your own moms.

Let’s face it, Mother’s Day wouldn’t have meaning without your kids being with you. But, a few blissful hours doing whatever the heck you pleased may be just what you need to recharge and be the best version of yourself for them. What if you could escape? What would you do? Where would you go?

I present to you a few ideas to put yourself first on a day that recognizes your awesomeness.

Sip and see

When is the last time you’ve been able to watch a movie all the way through without pausing, rewinding or falling asleep? Sit back, relax and watch a movie uninterrupted while you sip on cocktails. Muvico Rosemont 18 is one of my favorite places to go for drinks and dinner. Yes, they have a full menu like Pecan Crusted Mahi Mahi and The Grape Gatsby Flatbread Pizza. You won’t just find popcorn on the menu here! (But, I still highly recommend if you do have some, eat the whole bag with extra butter. You don’t even have to share!)

Stop and smell the roses

If Mother Nature cooperates, head to the Chicago Botanic Gardens for some fresh air. With 385 acres and six miles of lake shoreline, you can multitask by getting some exercise while taking in the gorgeous views. Don’t forget a blanket and book to sprawl out on the gorgeous lawn. Admission is free, but there is a parking fee of $30 on weekends.

Cleanse, refresh, purify

This is the mantra of King Spa & Sauna. This unique Korean-inspired spa offers a complete sauna experience with nine healing sauna rooms such as charcoal and crystal rooms, salt caves and fire sudatorium, exfoliation and massages, relaxing pools and even a movie theater. With so many relaxing options, you could literally spend the entire day here. King Spa gives new meaning to the term “spa day.” It’s open 24 hours and admission gets you all-day access.

Nap queen

Wouldn’t it be lovely to just take a nap on a really nice bed that you don’t have to remake? Well, you can. Hotel Tonight (a downloadable app via Google Play and the App Store) and Hotelsbyday, give a whole new meaning to an afternoon delight. With four-and five-star hotel accommodations starting at $75, who can resist that fluffy white robe calling your name? Namast’ay in bed.

While a Mother’s Day card and gift are very thoughtful, will any of you be changing the course and letting your significant other in on what you expect this Mother’s Day?
