Miles of fun in the Mile High City

A weekend in Denver sounded intriguing, but I had no idea it would be so much fun. As my 10-year-old Sofie and I quickly discovered, Denver is a beautiful, welcoming city.

We explored the Denver Art Museum, the Denver Zoo, Downtown Aquarium, Water World, the Children’s Museum of Denver, the gigantic flagship REI store, took a ride on the Platte Valley Trolley and went sightseeing and shopping in Lower Downtown (LoDo) and Larimer Square. At the zoo, we were surprised to find animals we had never seen before and happy to discover a silver back gorilla, on loan from our own Lincoln Park Zoo.

I could have easily spent more time at the art museum-the architecture of the building is a work of art all on its own and the family activities are very cleverly designed to fit all age groups. Sofie wanted more time to just walk and explore whatever we came to next.

We stayed at the coolest hotel ever-the Curtis. Every floor has a different pop culture theme. We stayed on the 15th floor. The elevator sang, “Welcome all my friends, you’re on the music floor.” We tied up the elevator for awhile when we stopped on every floor to hear the elevator sing and see the decorations. Instead of chocolates on our pillow each night, we found fun candy such as Pixie Stixs, Red Hots and Laffy Taffy.

Perhaps next time, we should allow time to see the mountains.
