Whether you’re a fan of classic magic like Houdini or modern day illusionists such as Criss Angel, the art of magic is something that always intrigued me. Utilizing sleight of hand and a variety of other tricks, magicians mesmerize their audience with humor, wonderment, and enticing others with their feats.
This past weekend, I had an opportunity to see The Magic Parlour at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel with my husband. It features the artistry and magic of award-winning, third-generation magician Dennis Watkins. Guests begin at Potter’s Lounge and are then brought to the private room where the performance lasts around 75 minutes.
A date night in the city seemed like just what the doctor ordered, so we headed out in the snow (I even wore heels!) and made our way to the hotel.
Once all guests for the evening had arrived, we were escorted upstairs and quickly chose seats. The height of the table gave us the perfect view and the size of the room ensured that all guests could see what was happening. The Magic Parlour also serves wine, beer, and soda complimentary with your ticket. I recommend grabbing a beverage when you first walk in so that you don’t miss any of the excitement!
Watkins was always aware of his surroundings – moving in such a way as to accommodate the different viewpoints of his audience. He incorporated guests from all over the room as assistants and his comedic timing flowed perfectly with the tempo of the evening.
Without giving too much away, the mind-reading segments were the most fascinating to me and always left me wondering, “How?” The swallowing of razor blades also had me questioning the actual safety of such a thing! Watkins delighted the audience, mystified people and provided an enjoyable evening out on the town.
I highly recommend The Magic Parlour for a new take on date night, for the budding magician in your home, or even just for a night out with friends. Be sure to make your reservations because the shows have a tendency to fill up quickly!
