A bit of Mexico in the city

If you are in search of delicious, authentic Mexican food everyone in your family will love, whether to celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day this September or to get a taste of our southern neighbor’s cuisine while saving on airfare, look no further than Los Comales. I visited this family-friendly restaurant on a recent trip to Pilsen, but with 15 Chicago-area locations you don’t have to travel to the city to get a taste of these famous tacos.

I ordered the barbacoa taco dinner, which came with rice and beans. The barbacoa was one of eight meat options and burritos have 12 fillings to choose from, so you’re bound to find something you’ll like. If you can’t decide, order individual tacos with different types of meat.

Although I was with a large group, our food arrived quickly. The barbacoa was juicy, topped with fresh lettuce and tomato and rolled up in one of the best corn tortillas I have ever had. The meal was very filling and only $6.50.

Other menu options include fajitas, steak and fried sea bass. Order a horchata (rice water) or tamarindo (tamarind fruit water) and top it all off with Flan Mexicano or Dulces Mexicanos.

Kids can order a bolsita para ninos (little bag for kids), which comes with your choice of two taquitos, two quesadillas or 10 chicken puffs, rice and beans, a small drink and a surprise toy, all for $4.70.

Los Comales is within walking distance of the CTA’s Pink Line 18th Street stop. Dine in or carry out, and delivery is available at some locations. Reservations are recommended for large groups.
