Local doc makes safety easy with iPhone app

Dr. Karen Judy has seen her share of injuries to kids caused by easily preventable accidents. That’s why the Loyola pediatrician has created an app that reminds parents of safety tips as their kids grow.

“I gave a talk about unintentional injuries for children and found out they’re the number one cause of morbidity and mortality for kids in the United States,” Judy says. “One out of four kids has some injury per year.”

When Judy later heard 60 percent of iPhone users are moms, she decided to create an age-based checklist of things parents can do to keep their child safe.

“I go from car to home and things to do out and about to keep kids safe,” she say, “from infant to adolescent.” The app ranges from tips for proper car seat usage to driving contracts and safe ride agreements for teens.
