This weekend marks the end of the National Fire Prevention Association’s fire prevention week. This yearโs theme is โEvery Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Outโ and fire departments across Lake County are hosting open houses and events to allow children to get up close with the firefighters and their equipment.ย

Cook Libraryโs Touch the Trucks
10 a.m. – 12 p.m., Oct. 14
Cook Park, 413 North Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville
Held on Church street lining Cook Park, vehicles from the LIbertyville Fire Depart and other community organizations will be open for children to climb aboard and explore. The first hour will feature no horns for children bothered by loud noise.ย
Police-Fire Open House
10 a.m. – 1 p.m., Oct. 14
Winnetka Fire and Police Departments, 410 Green Bay Rd., Winnetka
The community is invited to tour the headquarters of both the fire and police departments, view equipment demonstrations and sit in public safety vehicles.ย
Waukegan Fire Department Open House
11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Oct. 14
Waukegan Fire Station #2, 4505 McGaw Rd., Waukegan
Meet local heroes while taking fire station tours and seeing the trucks. The department will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as hosting giveaways.ย
Libertyville Fire Department Open House
1 – 4 p.m., Oct. 14
Libertyville Fire Station #1, 1551 N. Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville
Tour the station, watch demonstrations and interact with the firefighters while climbing inside a fire truck and spraying a real hose. Children can take the Kiddie Combat Challenge and learn how to escape a house fire.ย
Pancake Breakfast & Open House
7 a.m. – 12 p.m., Oct. 15
Grayslake Fire Station #1, 160 Hawley St., Grayslake
Pancake breakfast for the whole family. Adults are $6 and children ages 5-12 are $4, children younger than 5 eat free. The fire house will also be open for tours and time with the trucks.ย
North Chicago Public Safety Fair
10 a.m. – 1 p.m., Oct. 21
North Chicago City Hall, 1850 Lewis Ave., North Chicago
This free family event will feature fire and police demonstrations, vehicles, food and trick-or-treating for the kids.ย
