Kilt happy

If you’ve ever wanted to get in touch with your Scottish heritage or just want to experience a little culture shock, then you’ll definitely want to head to Oak Brook and check out the 22nd Annual Highland Games& Scottish Festival. Families will be able to enjoy both traditional and contemporary demonstrations at the two-day event.

“It’s an opportunity to celebrate Scottish identity with the whole family,” says Gus Noble, president and CEO of the Illinois Saint Andrew Society.

The festival kicks off at the Oak Brook Polo Grounds beginning at 4 p.m. June 20 with the Highland Dance competition and the Heavy Athletics U.S. Open Championship, featuring traditional Scottish contests like the 22-pound hammer throw and the Sheaf Toss (flipping hay over a high bar).

On Saturday, watch sheep herding demonstrations, see Scottish dogs, play mini golf, experience reptile encounters and see a kilted mile run/walk. At nighttime, families will love the Closing Ceremonies and Massed Bands Show that will feature 1,000 bagpipers and drummers, says Noble.

“If you feel Scottish or if you just want to (explore) Scottish tradition, this is an opportunity to enjoy with the family,” says Noble.

The festival is located at the Oak Brook Polo Grounds, 700 Oak Brook Road, Oak Brook, and is open from 4-8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $8, $5 for children on Friday and $13, $8 for children on Saturday. Advanced discounted tickets and weekend passes are on sale beginning June 1.
