Last year, we took a trip to Oahu, which I chronicled in an article for Chicago Parent (click HERE to read it).I was teleported, at least mentally, back to the Hawaiian islands last week, when Iattended a lovely lunchhosted by two cultural ambassadors from the island of Kaua’i. Here’s what I learned about the island of Kaua’i:
- Kaua’i has three navigable rivers and more than 50 miles of white-sand beaches.
- A flight from Honolulu takes only 25 minutes.
- No structure can be built more than four stories tall the size of a mature coconut tree.
- Family activitiesabound: swim, snorkel, scuba dive, canoe, hikealong the shoreline and inland, kayak – the list of fun family adventures goes on and on.
- Ziplining is a super popular family activity in Kaua’i: zip down a lineand lookdown at bamboo forests, streams and waterfalls.You can even zipline in tandem and take video and pictures of each other.
- South Pacific, Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark were all filmed on Kaua’i, and you can take a movie tour of the island.
- Makua Beach, with its underwater caverns and cathedrals is a thriving habitat for tropical fish and a delight for snorkelers.
I am looking forward to exploring Kaua’i on our next trip to the Hawaiian islands – especially since I am a closet scuba diver (when I was in Oahu, I was pregnant with Pupa, so needless to say I didn’t get to do much diving). Kaua’i, with its outdoor, tropical sports and activies galore – would fall into our ideal family travel destination category.
