Get out there and play

Break out your individually wrapped wet wipes and arrive with an empty stomach for a sauce-covered-face adventure at Rib Fest this weekend. With about 65,000 pounds of ribs available, your family will most certainly not leave hungry.

The festival began 10 years ago as a small neighborhood block party and has morphed into a grand street festival to help kick off the summer.

A street festival in Chicago isn’t complete without music. The festival will host 20 bands, including Company of Thieves, Mighty Short Bus, Scotland Yard Gospel Choir and Nada Surf.

After eating all of those ribs, head over to the Kids Square to burn off some energy. The little ones can climb, run and slide on inflatables and sing and dance their way through the weekend. Kids can also try their hand at crafts, miniature golf and other games. For a schedule of Kids Square entertainment, visit the Web site. A few of the entertainers include Julie Helenius, Shana Harvey and an animal show.

Rib Fest sizzles its way into summer from noon-10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Northcenter at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue, Damen Avenue and Irving Park Road in Chicago. Admission for adults is a $5 donation, kids are free. For more information, call (847) 677-8273 or visit the Web site, www.ribfest-chicago.com.
