Journey back to the Civil War

Step back in time with a visit to Naper Settlement’s Civil War Days, where more than 300 re-enactors will re-create all aspects of that historical period. The event includes daily battles between the Blue and Gray, musical entertainment, underground railroad re-enactments and a traveling medicine show.

“You can read about the Civil War and watch movies, but to come on the grounds and be totally immersed—it’s really history coming to life. You’re back in the 1800s,” says Maureen Malloy, Naper Settlement education event coordinator.

One of the best aspects for children is the ability to talk with and ask questions of the re-enactors."The re-enactors are mini-historians. They really know their history,” Malloy says. Families can ask questions at the press conference held by famous military generals of the time or visit with President and Mrs. Lincoln. At the recruitment rally, the re-enactor invites kids to join the military and teaches them what soldiers of the time would have experienced.

“A lot of the kids who come here are studying this in school, but when they come here they’re getting a lot more,” Malloy says."People walk away with a history lesson in the Civil War and that time period. It’s a learning experience.”

Civil War Days run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Malloy recommends starting at 10 a.m. because there are so many activities to enjoy throughout the day. Numerous food vendors will be on hand when it’s time for a lunch break.
