Bugs may be a delicacy in some foodie circles, but they don’t belong anywhere near baby formula.
Food products giant Abbot agrees, and issued a recall Wednesday of some 5 million units of its Similac baby formula, citing the possible presence of a small beetle in one of its facilities. The company, based in North Shore Abbott Park, is recalling certain Similac powder products.
To find out if your formula is affected, visit similac.com/recall/lookup and enter the lot number, which can be found stamped on the bottom of the can or plastic container (see photo). You can find more information at the FDA website or the Similac recall website, which was so overloaded with traffic that it stalled much of the day.
Experts say the chance of serious illness are slim, but that beetles or their larvae could irritate babies’ gastrointestinal tracts, causing some discomfort or loss of apetite.
