I know the thought of a girl’s weekend away will ruffle some mommas’ feathers. Sometimes we overthink it: “I can’t leave my kids.” “I’ll miss them too much.” “My husband won’t know what to do.”
And sometimes we forget what it’s even like to be away from them. What does that freedom feel like?
But there are many reasons why we (should) travel:
– To have the time to look deeply at life
– To get the chance to sleep through the night without getting up once
– To give our partners the chance to be fully in charge
– To be more grateful for our lives
They say distance makes the heart grow fonder, but I say distance makes me a more patient, tolerant and loving mom. It helps me have more reverence for the life I’ve created and I embrace it in a different way when I get home. And that alone makes it all so worth it.
So whether it’s an overnight in the city or nine days in Kuala Lumpur, we all return anew. How can we not? New experiences = new reality. Are you ready to pack your bags?
Here are four quick and easy jaunts you can take and still stay close to home (baby steps, right?).
Milwaukee, WI
This city feels bigger than it is, and I love that it’s on the water. So much water in fact, that when I crossed my third bridge in a night I was convinced I was in another country. It also has great restaurants that could give Chicago a run for it’s money, and amazing music. Check out the concert listings at Shank Hall Nite Club. The fun nightlife atmosphere will have for you and your gal pals ready to kick up your heels. It will do the job and is a short drive or train ride from Chicago.
Geneva, IL
Spring in Geneva is beautiful. The small shops and blooming trees make you feel like the season is neverending. The number of quaint hotels and Airbnb’s are growing every year, but the small town feel is there to stay. Your girls weekend will be filled with beautiful strolls, delicious brunch options and a souvenir or two from one of the many antique shops. Food is fabulous and everything tastes farm to table (because it usually is). My favorite place to stay is The Herrington Inn; they had cookies and milk waiting for us in our room when we arrived!
Madison, IN
This town is a diamond in the rough. The unique downtown has shops, restaurants and bars, and every night of the week you can find live entertainment nearby. Be sure to bring home a candle from Christy’s Candles. From now through November, on every fourth Friday of the month, celebrate Fourth Friday Downtown featuring live music, extended shopping and free trolley rides. New Buffalo, MI
Who doesn’t long for a beautiful stretch of beach along a sandy dune with plenty of boats and water options? I’ve been to New Buffalo a dozen times and it never gets old. You’re so close to the city and equally as close to Michigan’s wine country. There are a few hotel options close to the bustling town which houses about 50 ice cream shops. You and your friends can watch the sunset from the beach, have dinner on the rooftop of the ever popular Stray Dog Café and head home to your rental cottage for some local wine.
Now who wants to travel with me? I’m available.
