Get out there and play
As days go, this Friday is special since it only comes around every four years. Celebrate Leap Day with your family by making a visit to the Museum of Science and Industry, 5700 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago. The best part, admission into the museum is free. The U-505 boat on-board tour and 3-D theater shows will require an additional ticket, however. The museum hours are 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
On Saturday, you can celebrate the first day of March, as well as National Pig Day at Brookfield Zoo, 8400 W. 31st St., Brookfield. You don’t have to live in a pig sty—but it’s OK if you do—to enjoy the festivities, which include a pig parade, led by the Pigmobile. Pig-related activities will have your kids tickled pink and they’ll be squealing with joy when they see Pinto, the Yucatan miniature pig, show off a few tricks. This event will be held in the Children’s Zoo and the Hamill Family Play Zoo from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. and is free with museum admission.
If celebrating extra days and pink, four-legged creatures isn’t enough, stop by the Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park Ave., Chicago, to help commemorate the opening of the new permanent exhibit,“Sugar from the Sun.” The exhibit will have pathways leading through four different botanical environments to demonstrate how plants take in and use air, water and sunlight to make sugar energy. The 2,000 tropical plants have been arranged to allow visitors to hide amongst vanilla beans, walk“on air” and through towers of gnarled roots and of course, stop to smell the sweet flowers. The exhibit opens at 10 a.m.
