I had the best time this morning, sharing some of my favorite new games on Windy City LIVE. Val Warner is a DREAM to share a segment with (that’s a woman you’d like to have as a girlfriend for sure.)
I don’t know about you, but “Family Game Night” has long been a maternal thorn in my side. It’s an epic challenge to find the perfect night when everyone can clear their schedules, take a beat, and sit their bottoms down to PLAY.
When my kids were little, I held all the cards. I controlled their daily comings and going a lot more, and they loved to play all together as a family. But as they got a bit bigger and had more of their own agendas, time to play as a family sort of slipped away. And I wanted it back.
So, without further ado, here are some new ideas to help get us ALL back to the familial game board, or just playing together in some way, shape, or form.
Let’s Review:
-If you build it, they will come!
Don’t WAIT for your kids to ask, or the perfect time. Set up the game or activity, sit yourself down and look like you’re having fun. They’ll want some of that too.
-Game time can be anytime
Family game time doesn’t always have to take place around a table at a designated time. Try throwing it in while your kids are at the kitchen island watching you get dinner ready, in the back seat during carpool, or in bed one night instead of story time.
-Mix it up – try some new/creative games
Many kids don’t want anything to do with a game unless there’s a controller and it’s on a screen. There are a lot more options these days when it comes to fun/entertaining and creative games, other than the traditional four player board games.
