Waterproof clothing styles for spring

Although that whole “worst winter in 10 years” prediction never really panned out, come April 1, all of us here in Chicagoland are ready to run full-speed toward spring. It’s finally time to trade in your parkas for ponchos and your fuzzy boots for some waders.

Here’s a collection of waterproof products that will keep you stylin’ in the rain. So go ahead, make a splash.

Bag it and go

Keep your expensive handbags at home when the skies open up. Leather and water just don’t mix. Instead trade them in for this electric satchel from Target. It’s big enough to hold all your mom stuff, your own personal goodies and an umbrella, too.

  • Xhilaration Crossbody, .99

If you have less to carry, I’m loving these faux-leather envelope bags (the “it” style for spring) in two fun, color-blocked hues.

  • Mossimo Envelope Clutch, .99, in pink/orange or blue/green

Dodging drops

There’s something to say for the traditional tan trench or classic black raincoat. But this year, bold and bright is definitely the new black. Here are three rays of rain-slicker sunshine that will help you stand out in a sea of dark and gray. These can be found at Forever21.com or in stores.

(And they are all under !)

  • Coated Trench Coat, .99
  • Hooded Ripstop Poncho,
  • Trench Coat Poncho, (This is the one I just snagged and I can’t wait for the first April showers.)

Pops of color amidst the gray

There is nothing quite like an unexpected POP of bold bright color when the skies are gray.

This season’s “IT” pant, the colored denim, is the perfect way to bring a little sunshine to your cloudy day. If you’ve been wondering if you can pull off jeans in hues of red, yellow and blue, I’m here to shout a big fat Y.E.S. through my Fab Mama megaphone.

One of my favorites is from Ann Taylor. It fits just below the waist and has a touch of spandex to give you some movement while you’re chasing those kids.

They come in campfire red and electric blue. at AnnTaylor.com.

* If you get downtown this spring, make sure to pop into the brand new, and quite lovely, Ann Taylor Concept Store at 600 Michigan Ave.

It’s a great place to get your color ON!

Topping it off

I love a bit of menswear mixed into my otherwise girlie wardrobe. And this men’s Scottish tweed rain hat by L.L. Bean fits the bill perfectly. It’s made with Gore-Tex and completely waterproof, yet breathable. .99. llbean.com

Pair this with jeans tucked into your high rain boots, an over-sized cable sweater and a black scarf and you’re one chic lassie indeed.
