Dry erase paint is a great way to spruce up your walls without doing serious damage to your home’s value.
Kids’ rooms looking a little drab? Tackling those rooms might just be this summer’s fave DIY project thanks to some cool products and a new money-saving Web site that’s creating buzz.
But where to start? Monica Pedersen, HGTV designer and Chicago resident, has a few ideas. “What I tell people before they are redecorating (is) come up with a realistic budget,” she says. “Everyone’s on a budget. Don’t apologize for it, celebrate it, work with it. I don’t think people need to make serious investments for kids’ décor.”
If you already have the furniture, she says, you should be able to easily decorate a kid’s room for about $250.
Start by looking online for ideas and prices. The new Web site,mastercardmarketplace.com, is a great place to find discounts, coupons and exclusive deals, she says. Check under the Home section.
Try the new Dry Erase paints to create an entire wall kids can write on and decorate over and over again with markers-all without upsetting you. Look into the fun, fashionable plastic spray paint colors to paint the molded kids furniture to fit your vision. Just take the furniture outside and spray. “Really have fun with paints and colors,” she says.
Look for pieces that can serve various purposes. She recently found a little coffee table on wheels at Target that opens up to double as a toy bin. Anytime you are out at Target or Home Depot, look for cute, child-like and fun dividers and modular closet sets to help kids take charge of cleaning up after themselves.
If you want to go green, pick a fun scrubbable matte paint for the walls and switch to 100 percent wool rugs for the floor.
“Just bring in fun ways for (kids) to enjoy their space,” Pedersen advises.
