Looking for a"just right” size museum, which will hold the interest of small children, bigger kids and adults, too? Drive a few miles north of the Illinois state line to Kenosha, Wis., and you’ll find just what you’re looking for. The Dinosaur Discovery Museum is kid-friendly, and it’s free.
When you walk into the building, you will be greeted by a Dilophosaurus, a large dinosaur with two red crests on his head and a big long tail. Unlike the skeletons in the main hall of the museum, kids can touch this model.
In the main hall, descriptive panels line the wall explaining what dinosaurs were, where they lived and what they ate. Specimens range from an Eoraptor, the size of a large cat, to a giant T. Rex.
On Saturday afternoons, kids can dig for bones at an artificial excavation site.
Your visit doesn’t have to end with learning about dinosaurs. Hop on an old-fashioned streetcar and ride a few blocks east to the Kenosha Public Museum to check out a 12,000-year-old woolly mammoth and other exhibits about the animals, people and the land of Southeastern Wisconsin.
A new exhibit opening at the Kenosha Public Museum called"Hatching the Past: Dinosaur Eggs and Babies” lets kids touch a real dinosaur egg.
