Get out and play

A trip to the artic tundra—also known as the Northerly Island Visitor Center, 1400 S. Lynn White Drive, Chicago—is a good way to meet strange and wild creatures—also known as Polar Huskies and other live animals at Polar Adventure Days.

You and your family can explore nature by not only getting nose to nose with some live animals, but also by snowshoeing and cross-country skiing (weather permitting). After playing outside, warm up with a nice cup of hot cocoa while you create winter crafts. There will also be ice carving demonstrations and winter storytelling.

Polar Adventure Days kicks off Saturday, but occurs through the winter on Jan. 19 and Feb. 23. All of the events are free and last from noon-4 p.m. The snowshoe rental is free and the first 500 visitors on each of the three days will receive a complimentary Polar Adventure Day mug filled with hot chocolate.

Remember to dress warmly. It is a good idea to call to confirm that all events are occurring since some activities depend on weather. For more information, call (312) 742-7529 or visit the Web site, www.chicagoparkdistrict.com.
