A culinary tour of Asia at Pei Wei

My sons are huge Asian food fans. From pot stickers and tofu soup to Pad Thai and sesame chicken, they love it all. So when we heard about Pei Wei Asian Diner in Logan Square, we rushed to try it. The menu features items from five Asian countries: China, Japan, Vietnam, Korea and Thailand, all priced under $10. With the wide selection and great prices, we were able to enjoy family favorites and sample some scrumptious new dishes.

As soon as we entered, my sons noticed the high tech menu boards, which break down the dining options with pictures and extended descriptions. These are followed by pop machines unlike any we’ve ever seen. Choose any flavor of Coca-Cola products, including cream sodas, and make “mix-ups.” Once my kids got their cups, they were like mad scientists.

Luckily, the quality of the food lived up to the great modern atmosphere. The Pork Potstickers (available in quantities of two, four and six) were a big hit, as was the Thai Wonton Soup, which my 5-year-old deemed “the best ever.” I especially enjoyed the Vietnamese Chicken Salad Rolls because they were so fresh.

With classic dishes, customers can choose white or brown rice, the style and the protein. For instance, we sampled Sesame Chicken with brown rice and Thai River Noodles with beef.

I also highly recommend the Korean BBQ Beef, one of Pei Wei’s Signature Entrees. It’s sweet and spicy, served with a delicious apple-cucumber salad.

While it would be easy for each person in your family to order on his own, portion sizes are perfect for sharing, which means you can easily order something from each of the five countries featured. It’s truly an easy, delicious and inexpensive Asian adventure.
