Spring clean your closets: 4 consignment and thrift stores in Evanston

For kids

Threads Boutique

1304 Chicago Ave.

Shopping for a special occasion can be expensive, especially when you’re shopping for rapidly growing children. Most of the time those special outfits or fancy shoes are only worn a few times. Then what do you do with them? Moms Anna and Chaya wondered just that and decided to open up a consignment shop just for kids in Evanston.

Threads Boutique offers a variety of gently used and new high quality, name brand clothing for kids for a fraction of the retail cost. They have a vast variety of items, ranging from tap dance shoes and summer shorts to customizable local works of art. Anna and Chaya are very selective in the items they choose to display. You will not find a huge clutter of clothing here, which can be overwhelming. Everything is neatly organized by age and occasion, which makes it easy to navigate through.

For moms

See Jane Sparkle

1312 Chicago Ave.

Just down the block from Threads Boutique is a small unique shop that offers customizable vintage and modern jewelry and vintage shoes, purses and clothing.

My favorite part of this store? You can host a small gathering of 25-30 guests for a ‘Beads and Bubbly’ party. What a perfect idea for a birthday party or bridesmaids activity! You can enjoy time with your friends while designing your own unique jewelry and sipping on glass of bubbly (or soda for younger ones).

For parents

Crossroads Trading Co.

1730 Sherman Ave.

Crossroads is a well-organized shop that has a wide range of brand name modern and vintage clothing and accessories for men and women.

Spring cleaning your closet? Take the clothing purge over to Crossroads where you will receive money on the spot; either 35 percent for what they would sell your item for or 50 percent store credit to shop yourself and restock. I personally prefer the latter, you did just make room in your closet after all!

For the whole family

Junior League of Evanston-Northshore Thrift House

920 Chicago Ave.

JLE-NS is friendly thrift store that has been in Evanston for nearly 76 years. They have undergone a recent remodel, making it even easier to navigate around the store. They have a wide variety of gently-used quality clothing for men, women and kids, plus shoes, purses, household items, books and even small furniture.

JLE-NS gives back to the community through a number of charitable organizations such as the YWCA (domestic violence shelter for women in Evanston).
