Driving in strange cities is an incredibly stressful thing for someone like me–someone who manages to get lost even with a GPS.
Add an unfamiliar rental car to the mix and my stress level rises exponentially.
I prefer destinations that are walkable or have good public transit, which means I rarely rent cars when I’m out of town. (I did it on the Hawaiian island of Kauai because driving is really the only way to get around and there’s really only one road around the island. And, yes, I still managed to turn the wrong way out of the hotel parking lot twice.)
But I know that lots of people do rent cars when they travel. For you, I pass along this list compiled by Hotwire.com of the top 16 US cities where consumers can find car rentals for $16 or less per day. The rates below are all based on a one day rental from the local airport in August.
