Two canoeing events on Father’s Day weekend

It’s Father’s Day weekend and for some reason that means canoes. Two canoe events in the Northern suburbs this weekend caught our eye.

First there’s the Heller Nature Center’s event at Skokie Lagoons on Friday night, June 15. Their certified canoe teachers will provide the water craft, paddles, personal flotation devices (didn’t they used to be called life jackets?) and instruction for your family to learn the fine art of canoeing. When you dress, assume it’s going to be colder than it is. And you might want to bring a change of clothes for after.

There is a maximum of four participants (two adults& two children or three adults) per canoe. Children must be accompanied by a participating adult. You can register online (the link is at the top of the page) or call the Park District of Highland Park at (847)579-3128 as their website is a bit confusing.

On Saturday, June 16, the Chicago Botanic Garden is partnering with the Friends of the Chicago River in a day before Father’s Day canoe adventure. Bob Kirschner, the Garden’s aquatic biologist, will guide familes through the lakes and will explain the Garden’s shoreline restoration program.

The adventure is for families of all skill levels. Instruction and all the paraphanalia will be provided. For more information or to purchase tickets visit or call (847) 835-8261.
