Where to bike with kids around Chicago and the suburbs

With gas prices skyrocketing, now’s the time to break out the bikes. But if you’re tired of riding the same old loops around the neighborhood, check out these suggestions for trails that thrill and roads to ride.

Greg Borzo, a Chicago dad and author ofWhere to Bike Chicago, recommends families start with shorter, less-popular routes, like a 1.3-mile loop on Northerly Island or the lakefront path south of the museum campus, which tends to be quieter than the always-packed north end.

For a really different kind of bike ride, head to the bicycle track at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome in Northbrook. “It’s a treasure,” Borzo says. “It’s a race track that’s open to anyone on any kind of bike. It’s free and during the day, anyone can go.”
