Get out there and play
It seemed so far away mere weeks ago, but spring has finally arrived, kind of. To celebrate, we have a few ideas to get in tune with our planet Earth and its inhabitants. From flowers to scales, we have you covered this weekend.
Stretch your legs and get some fresh air during the Free Trail Walk at The Grove, 1421 Milwaukee Ave., Glenview, 2 p.m. Saturday. During the walk, your family will see wildflowers, learn about bird migration and view other signs that spring has finally sprung. The walk will be lead by a staff naturalist. Although Chicago is void of rainforests, that doesn’t mean you can’t learn about them. The Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park Ave., Chicago, will host Amazing Aroid Plantings from 1-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Learn all about aroids, a type of rainforest plant and then create a habitat for your own. If you have had enough of flowers and fresh air, head over to Notebaert Nature Museum, 2430 N. Cannon Drive, Chicago, on Saturday and Sunday to visit a few scaly creatures during Snakes, Lizards and More from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The Chicago Herpetological Society will bring along a few friends, including eyelid-shedding snakes, lumpy frogs, blue-tongued skinks and perhaps a few slippery salamanders. The specialists from the Herpetological Society will be able to give your family a few facts about the anatomies and behaviors of frogs, snakes and toads. If you can’t make it this weekend, the program will be running twice a month through June. While you are at the museum, visit the Judy Istock Butterfly. Interacting with the Herpetological creatures is free, but admission to the museum is $9, $7 seniors and students (13-22) and $6 kids 3-12.
