Looking for weekend plans that keep your soul inspired (and your feet toasty warm)? Check out these three picks for going out as a fam — and cuddling up with your crew.
‘Montauciel Takes Flight’ at Lifeline Theatre
Care for a little bit of girl power and STEM happiness with your arts? Soar over to Lifeline for their latest world premiere family musical, ‘Montauciel Takes Flight.’ The plucky ewe Montauciel may have a name meaning “climb to the sky,” but the adventure-seeker has always had four feet planted firmly on the ground. That is, until she finds her way to a new town with new friends in need of Montauciel’s scientific ingenuity and bravery. Can she help a team of scientists invent the first hot air balloon? Will she succeed in leading the first “manned” flight? Are your kids (five and older) going to adore this one? (Yes. “Ewe” too.)
Saturday, Jan. 13 through Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018
Lifeline Theatre, 6912 N. Glenwood Ave., Chicago
‘Justin Roberts and the Not Ready For Naptime Players’ at Old Town School
Who couldn’t use a little bit of summer, smack dab in the middle of January? Justin Roberts — fresh from his third Grammy nom — and his Not Ready For Naptime Players are heading back to Chicago for their annual jam at the Old Town School of Folk Music and will be playing hits from the critically acclaimed album ‘Lemonade.’ (If you’ve yet to give Roberts’ brand of witty, fresh pop a listen, do yourself a favor — not to mention a favor for your kids’ playlist.)
Saturday, Jan. 14, 2018
Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 N Lincoln Ave., Chicago
‘The Artist’s Studio’ at the Art Institute of Chicago
Newcomers to the Modern Wing’s Ryan Learning Center are always amazed by two things: first, that the artistic paradise is chock full of everything your little creator could possibly want, and two, that the family-friendly events hosted here are entirely free. So what’s in store for this weekend at the Artist’s Studio? The Family Room could be hosting studio art-making, a project inspired by gallery works, or even a visit by a guest artist; the only thing your kids won’t have access to is boredom.
Saturday, Jan. 13 and Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018 from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Art Institute of Chicago’s Ryan Learning Center, 111 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago
