After the drab grays of winter, April means we can saturate ourselves in spring colors. So pack your camera and head out to one of these bright spots.
1) Garfield Park Conservatory specializes in “green” with its newly reopened palm room, but you can also discover pinks, purples and blues in bloom both inside and out. Don’t miss the Elizabeth Morse Children’s Garden, especially for toddlers. For extra fun, take advantage of the free drop-in activities on Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

2) For the best garden in the city, choose a nice day to explore Lurie Garden in Millennium Park. Visit its website to create your own scavenger list. Can you find the purple ornamental onion? The orange center of a crocus? How about some pink prairie smoke? Lurie Garden is a great place to find peace among the bustle of city life.

3) Help the Chicago Botanic Garden celebrate its 40th anniversary this year by strolling through some of its 24 formal gardens. Kids will enjoy the tram tour, which covers most of the 385 acres of woods, waterways and colorful flowers. Stop at the Visitors Center for a discovery backpack, which provides binoculars, magnifiers and field journals to enrich kids’ experiences.
