Cirque du Soleil celebrates an incredible milestone this season — 30 years touring the Windy City with its 25th show! And for the first time ever, the new Cirque du Soleil show raises their Big Top at Soldier Field’s south parking lot.
“Volta” embraces the power of free spirit in their performance filled with daring heights, talented performers and non-stop energy. Toss it in with some excellent lighting and special effects, you’ve got a show worthy of a spot on your family bucket list this summer.
The story follows Waz, a contestant on a game show, who rediscovers himself with the help of others. At times, the narrative might be a bit hard to follow especially for a younger audience member, but the acts are what keep the entire family mesmerized and cheering all night long.
This amount of energy is possible with the hard work and talent from the performers throughout the show. Each circus-like act brings together a unique skill from the cast whether it’s a hair suspension (like the photo above) or precision jump rope.
Other notable acts bring an element of sports thrill to the circus mix. The trampoline act, for example, will make your kids wish that they had half the skills of those jumpers. One of the best acts is saved for last with a BMX park (where the ramps moved around simultaneously) as the bikers dazzled the crowd with extreme shows. “Volta” is destined for thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies.
Having this show under the tent, Cirque du Soleil brings us back to the classic days of the circus with a modern spin. Writer and director Bastien Alexandre sets up the show for a newer generation with the use of technology, lighting and music. It’s a good thing that the tent can withstand winds up to 75 mph (and let’s be honest—that’s the protection they need when they’re set up by Lake Michigan).
When attending the premiere, it was great to see so many children in the audience and their enjoyment of a circus company around for decades. Just wait until Mr. Wow, a clown, battles out some machines at a laundromat. You’ll definitely hear many giggles from little ones as you’re laughing along as well.
It’s why “Volta” presents itself as the perfect show for all ages. No matter how old you are, you’ll feel like a kid, amazed by all the tricks and thrills that make these circus performers one-of-a-kind.
