We’ve been honoring veterans for their service as a national holiday for more than 100 years now. This Veterans Day, it’s important for you and the family to think about it more than another day off of school. Here are some local events to help you honor veterans.Â
City
City of Chicago Veterans Day Ceremony
When: Nov. 11, 11 a.m.
Where: Soldier Field, Gate 0, 1410Â Museum Campus Drive, Chicago
Mayor Lori Lightfoot and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events will honor local and national veterans at this year’s ceremony.Â
National Veterans Art Museum
When: Nov. 11, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Where: 4041 N. Milwaukee Ave., 2nd Floor, Chicago
The museum will have special open hours in honor of the veterans community. Throughout the day, they will host guided tours, drop-in activities and poppy making workshops.Â
North/Northwest Suburbs
Veterans 5K Run & Walk
When: Nov. 9, 9-11 a.m.
Where:Â 1288 Elmwood Road, Rockford
This patriotic-themed race allows the entire family to participate while supporting The Veterans Drop-In Center in Rockford. Kids can join the 5K or take place in the Kids Fun Run (ages 10 and under) before the 5K begins. Â
Western Suburbs
Veterans Day Parade
When: Nov. 11, 10:15 a.m.
Where: Aurora
The city of Aurora holds its annual Veterans Day Parade to recognize local military service men and women. The event will include a ceremony with a military rifle salute by veteran organizations at 11 a.m..
Veterans Day Celebration
When: Nov. 11, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Brookfield
A special ceremony will take place at Brookfield Zoo’s Discovery Center along with a display of military memorabilia and military vehicles. Enjoy a performance by the Legacy Girls and Jesse White Tumblers. Admission to the zoo is free for all guests (veterans can receive free parking).
Spirit at Sundown: Veterans Day Commemoration
When: Nov. 11, 4:30-7 p.m.
Where: First Division Museum Lobby, 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton
The First Division Museum will host an evening where you can meet local community veteran groups and drop-in activities to give back to those who have served. Â
South Suburbs
Veterans Day Celebration
When: Nov. 10, Noon-3 p.m.
Where:Â Konow’s Corn Maze, 16849 Cedar Road, Homer Glen
Spend a day with your family to honor and recognize veterans. Activities include food, beverages, tractor and military vehicles exhibits, face painting, kid activities and more.Â
