This Lakeview breakfast spot serves up egg-cellent fare

As Diversey Harbor dwellers on the weekends, Yolk has become our favorite go-to spot for delicious breakfast eats. Depending on my mood, I can go savory or sweet, sinful or clean. They are sure to please just about everyone in your brood. Now, for the eggs. Yolk conjures up that image of a delicious poached egg with a broken yolk that runs into a beautiful sunny swirl over your toast. You can also get ‘em scrambled, as fluffy omelets, as bennys (traditional or even with pot roast!) and as frittatas; all are standard on this egg-cellent menu.

Yolk does serve up more than egg dishes. They boast a very expansive menu of fresh squeezed juices (orange, grapefruit, strawberry OJ), fresh brewed lattes and coffees, skillets, crepes, waffles, steak or salmon with eggs, and chicken and waffles.

The coffee is strong, but not too strong and I always have a full cup. They will even make iced coffee or other specialty coffee/espresso drinks. Move over, Starbucks.

Our family favorites include:

CHILAQUILES VERDE – House made corn tortilla chips, salsa verde, avocado, pepper jack, red onion and crema. Topped with two eggs any style. Order them over easy and add steak. You’re welcome.

CROQUE MADAME – Grilled Ham, turkey, Swiss and Dijon sauce layered within slices of challah French toast, topped with a sunny side up egg, plus seasoned potatoes or cheesy grits. Get the grits. Duh.

SOUTH BEACH – Half pineapple filled with house made Greek yogurt, diced pineapple, strawberries, almond granola, walnuts. Served with a fresh baked muffin. This is great to share with your family!

YOLK ALL-STAR COMBO – Two eggs any style, two sausage links, two slices of bacon and your choice of two pancakes, two crepes, two slices of French toast, or a half waffle. Upgrade to one of our sweet favorites (think Nutella Crepes or the cinnamon roll French toast). For an extra few bucks, it’s worth it.

For the kiddies

Yolk also gets a huge A+ in my book for the kids menu. They have a full range of favorites to please any kid, from the “big kid breakfast” combo (one egg any style, one bacon strip, one sausage link and your choice of diced red potatoes or fruit and one pancake or piece of toast) or French toast sticks, to a kid’s turkey burger and a simple PB&J. Prices range from $3.99 to $5.99.

Overall impression

Basically, Yolk has everything and you better find someone to go halfsies on splitting food. There always seems to be a long line to get a table, but it moves fast. (Pssst, you can even skip the wait and order online!) So, if you’re looking for quality food with a fair price that will please everyone from the pickiest eater to those with a more adventurous palette – Yolk isn’t yolkin’ around.
