4 playful date nights for adults in Chicago

February can be a very long cold month here in Chicago, where playful spirits seem to go into hibernation. Come out of hiding, gather a few of your favorite couples and plan some group-date fun.

Whirlyball

If you haven’t tried Whirlyball yet, your inner 8-year-old is begging you to give it a go. Think bumper cars meets basketball, lacrosse and hockey. You play in teams of five with a referee who will help you learn the rules.

Whirlyball has a newly opened cool location in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood that also features 12 bowling lanes and laser tag—and a full bar and restaurant. Done and done.

Second City

“Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.” – Victor Hugo

Every time my husband and I go to historic Second City and watch the magic of the performers’ hilarious sketch comedy and improv skills, we walk away lighter and giddy, having happily re-connected over utter ridiculousness. It’s one of our city’s theatrical treasures and if you haven’t been, well, you really NEED to go.

Game night

When’s the last time the two of you played a board game together without having to manage the kids’ competitive sides or let someone win?

I love the idea of putting the little ones to bed, mixing up a favorite cocktail, lighting a bunch of candles, and having your appetizers for dinner as you take each other on in a classic game of Monopoly or Scrabble.

Penguin Foot Pottery

Looking to flip the date on its muddy heels? You are going to love the “Happy Hour” class at Penguin Foot Pottery, 2514 W. Armitage Ave., Chicago.

If you have always wanted to try your hand at the pottery wheel or just want an artsy fun new way to spend time together, this BYOB pottery throwing session is the ticket. Classes run 6-9 p.m. Saturdays. You’ll get to keep up to two pieces you’ve created. There’s nothing more fun than learning something new together—while drinking wine.

Hint: We recommend NOT trying to re-create the pottery wheel scene from the movie “Ghost” while you’re there.
