One of the things I love most about summer is the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables available. Rather than head to Costco or Mariano’s, I’d much rather hit up farmer’s markets, roadside stands and U-Pick farms. One of my favorite June traditions is picking strawberries. I remember going to the farms when I was younger, bright and early, ready to get my feast on! I’ve since carried on that tradition with my girls for the last few years. The season is short, but there are still a few more good weekends left! I’ve handpicked a few of my favorite farms to get your pick on for the freshest, sweetest and juiciest berries around!
3709 Miller Rd, McHenry, IL
This sprawling farm located in McHenry County offers 17 acres of strawberries ripe for the picking! The U-Pick hours are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and market hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. Pricing varies based on the size of the basket, from $4 for a 1-quart to $12 for a 4-quart. Don’t forget to check out their bakery for fresh doughnuts (apple cider or strawberry), strawberry rhubarb pies, jams and jellies, and even fresh strawberry lemonade slushies; a perfect treat after being out in the sun. They also offer additional fruits and vegetables throughout the season. Check out the produce calendar for more information.
10214 W Algonquin Rd, Huntley, IL
Tom’s is a family owned farm that has been open for more than 40 years! I grew up going to Tom’s when I was a kid. Located in Huntley, Tom’s offers a fun wagon ride to the field for your crew before putting you to work. Berries are just $2.29/lb. Don’t forget to check out their bakery, farm market and garden center for delicious treats, plants and more. You can even stay for lunch at Cheryl’s café. The menu offers everything from yummy coffee drinks from their espresso bar to breakfast fare, paninis and more!
18110 Kishwaukee Valley Rd, Woodstock, IL
Head out to Woodstock for prime picking at McCann’s, another farm that has been serving Illinois families for many years (33!). McCann’s offers three acres of strawberries, three acres of blueberries (almost in season!) and one acre of sugar snap peas (in season now, too). Bring your own baskets and receive 50 cents off. (Baskets from other farms are welcome).
