3 Farmers Markets that will have you stoked for autumn

Don’t give up the summertime dream of Farmers Markets just yet! Sure, the days of sweet corn have passed (sigh), but these three city markets are welcoming the fall with open arms–and more than a few gourds, pumpkins and impossibly beautiful apples.

Garfield Park Farmers Market

With the goal of fostering community wellness, Garfield Park’s Garden Network and Farmers Market also promotes healthy choices and lifestyles, and supports service learning for area teens. This award-winning association of local gardens–encompassing more than three acres–has beautified a neighborhood and increased the availability of fresh produce in one of Chicago’s food desert neighborhoods. And if fresh, local produce, plentiful arts, kid-friendly activities and food demonstrations aren’t enough, you’re really going to be blown away by the community greenhouse (which starts over a whopping 2,000 seedlings each season)!

Runs Oct. 8 and 13, 2016

200 N. Kedzie Ave., Chicago

Horner Park Farmers Market

Although relatively new on the open-air market scene, the Horner Park Farmers Market has wasted no time making a name for themselves in terms of community, local support and sustainably sourced goods. Vendors sell everything from glossy produce to scrumptious baked goods (pumpkin Nutella muffins, anyone?) and still manage to surprise even jaded foodies. (Last week’s pork bao from Oxtail Filipino Inspired did just that.) Throw in a rotating lineup of popular musicians and kid-friendly events and, really, your morning just solved itself.

Runs Saturdays through Oct. 1, 2016

2741 W. Montrose Ave., Chicago

61st Street Farmers Market

Known as the South Side’s “premier farmers market,” this powerhouse works to bring the freshest and best in meats, eggs, cheeses, produce and prepared goodies from local and regional vendors. Their chef demos and Market School series let novice chefs on up get educated in all things culinary and sustainable, while live music draws large, well-fed crowds. (Pro-tip: Never turn down the pie. Or the bread. Or the cheese. Or … )

Outdoors until Nov 26, 2016

6100 S. Blackstone Ave., Chicago
