Chicagoland takes St. Patrick’s Day seriously! With a rich Irish history and culture, the city goes all out, often celebrating the Irish-American holiday all week long.
Perhaps the most iconic part of Chicago’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations is the annual river dyeing, a process where members of the Plumbers Local 130 UA union board boats and dye the Chicago River a vibrant emerald green using eco-friendly dye. Following the river dyeing ceremony, a festive downtown parade features floats, marching bands, traditional Irish dancing and more.
If you travel to the south side of the city, you’ll find lively festivities in Beverly, one of Chicago’s proudest Irish neighborhoods. The South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the largest community-based St. Patrick’s Day parade outside of Ireland and tons of fun for families of all ages.
On the northwest side in Norwood Park, a smaller annual parade keeps the festivities going. This year, the Northwest Side Irish Parade will celebrate the day with its 21st parade.
