Families looking for a little magic in the middle of winter will have a new reason to bundle up and head to Downtown Naperville. On Dec. 4, ArtForum Naperville unveiled Naperville’s “Music Box” — a pop-up interactive art installation that invites kids (and their grown-ups) to touch, play and explore.
What visitors can expect
Tucked in the alley between Apple and Sephora, the installation turns an ordinary walkway into a colorful sensory world filled with light, sound and motion. Created by Freightwood, a new creative production studio led by artist Maddie Peterson and Tony Award–nominated designer Joshua Carr, the “Music Box” encourages curiosity and hands-on fun — perfect for families strolling downtown during holiday shopping or dining.
Visitors can experience the installation from early December through January 25, 2026. The official opening took Dec. 4, and families are welcome to stop by, snap photos and let the kids explore the space.
Art that brings people together
“This project is about bringing people together and transforming overlooked public spaces into places that inspire,” says Michael Gold, president of ArtForum Naperville, in a press release. With support from the City of Naperville and the Special Events and Cultural Amenities (SECA) Fund, the group continues its push to make public art accessible, engaging and community-centered.
